I have been a fan of Rex Stout's books since 1955 when I first read his books about Nero Wolfe. I am now 81-3/4 and still reading these books. My husband has started reading these books also. I was amazed while reading Fer-de-Lance, his first book. Rex Stout was 45 and did amazing things even before starting his career of writing the very best detective mysteries ever written by any other writer. I am currently putting Mr. Stout's books on my i-pad and my husband is reading them on my Kindle. I just finished reading a book by Rex Stout that is not about Nero Wolfe and it has many wonderful characters and a story line similar to Nero Wolfe and his wonderful characters in the Nero Wolfe books. I enjoy reading Rex Stout's books over and over again and am happy to find his books that are new to me. I want to read all 46 books written by Rex Stout and make that my goal before I die. Hopefully I will live to be 100+. There are a few other writers I enjoy, but Rex Stout is the very, very best.Product details

These first two books introducing Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin are amazing in the development of the characters. There were not many changes throughout the succeeding books. Fer-de-Lance, as his first case, shows Archie's sarcasm and sense of humor as well as Wolfe's brilliant detecting skills. Wolfe is sure that a man, certified as having died from heart disease, has actually been murdered. He determines how and ultimately who was behind the murder. The League of Frightened Men was more complicated because he undertakes a seemingly impossible job for twenty-five men who are convinced their lives are in danger. In this book you see more of the interaction between Wolfe and Archie as well as their reliance on each other. There are more complications that require Wolfe's cleverness to bring events to a successful conclusion. Rex Stout is one of my favorite authors, and I have read each of his books more than once. I highly recommend any of the Nero Wolfe series to mystery fans. These books are timeless and rely on brilliant detecting ability. No artificial or excessive action is required to keep the reader engaged. These are wonderful mysteries.
The late Rex Stout wrote a total of 70 mystery novels in his lifetime. I have yet to read all of them because many are simply unavailable. Thankfully some publishers have arranged with the Estate to reprint them and make these wonderful murder mystery classics available again to the general public. For the vision impaired reader a limited number of these suspense mysteries are available in Large Print. The hero of is Nero Wolfe, a private detective and a man of few words, has the vision to look beyond the obvious clues (and so called evidence) and find inconsistencies which lead him to the perpetrator. More often than not, just when the authorities have all the evidence they need to indict, Wolfe disabuses them of their notions and delivers the whodunit in breathtaking and dramatic fashion. A real page turner hard to put down.
Previously, my only familiarity with Nero Wolfe had been the excellent A&E series of several years ago. I liked the characters enough, and found the plots interesting enough that I decided to read some of the novels. Although I've seen where many book series take a while to develop, and the first volumes may not be written by an author at the peak of his talent or ability, I decided to begin with the first one, FER-DE-LANCE. I'm happy to say that I'm glad I did.
Interestingly, and unusually, the TV series got a lot of the details correct. It was easy to picture Nero's home and every room in it. The story was a typical murder mystery, and by that I mean a case in which a corpse might or might not be the victim of murder, a select number of suspects/auxilliary characters appear, and after a few twists and turns the detective finally gets the actual culprit. However, Stout carries it off well. As a matter of fact, although this is the first novel in the series, the story jumps right in and begins with the familiar interactions between Archie, Fritz and Nero. I believe we're told that Archie had already been in Nero's employ for 7 years.
Having been published in 1934, the dialogue is a little dated. But it's very readable. Archie narrates, and we see Nero through his eyes. Nero is a genius, and Archie has a lot of respect for him, but he is also tempermental, arrogant, selfish and not a little bit mercenary. Nero solves the mystery long before Archie, but keeps the solution to himself, which understandibly annoys Archie extremely. The same happened in the Sherlock Holmes stories, except Archie's annoyance is a more natural reaction than Dr. Watson's abject and unalloyed admiration.
About the dated language, if you've read Dashiell Hammett or Raymond Chandler, you should have no trouble. My verdict? This book is an excellent first at-bat for Rex Stout's detective, and I'm looking forward to continuing with the series.
The first entry in the Nero Wolfe Mysteries. All the main characters are here, and the formula is set for later books, though the characters are refined in later books to good effect. Wolfe is a little long winded here, and Archie isn't as smooth or cool and sophisticated as he is in later books (which is the only reason I give this 4 stars rather than the usual 5 I give to Stout). But the mystery in this one is probably one of the better ones, with a clever who-dun-it and an even more clever how-dun-it. These books laid the foundation for many series to come and are well worth the read. For a book written 80 years ago this (and the others) are remarkably undated outside of the automobiles and the prices of items. Well worth a read, and a must read for any serious mystery enthusiast. Stout is one of the few writers who have NEVER disappointed me.
